Coaching
Staff:
Gary Alexander Staurowsky,
(Camp Coordinator) originally from Philadelphia, (La Salle College High School
Class of 2004) graduated Hofstra in 2008. At Hofstra, he rowed competitively
for 4 years and at different times acted as club treasurer, team president,
equipment manager, and MVP 2006. He was awarded both the Student Government
Club President of the year as well as the Hofstra Recreation Leadership of
Excellence award in 2007. Gary coached Long Island Rowing for Spring of 2008 and
helps coach Sagamore programs from time to time. He regularly volunteers his
trailer driving skills at Row New York. Gary coached Hofstra’s Men’s and
Women’s 2-s to Bronze and Gold respectively at NY State Collegiate Championships
in 2009. He graduated with a Major in International Business and minors in
Information Technology and French. He’s been working full time at Morgan
Stanley since September 2008. Gary has been a Sagamore member since 2004 and a
Trustee since 2010. Gary continues to row in his spare time as well as compete
at the Charles every year.
Troy Smith:
(Summer Program's Head Coach) Coach Troy is the head coach of all Sagamore youth
rowing and is one of just a few full time rowing coaches on Long
Island. Starting his rowing career at the University of Nebraska in 1995 on a
dare to run some stadium stairs the sport of rowing has grown to a passion for
him. A versatile rower in college, Smith stroked his lightweight four, he was
an alternate for the men's heavy four, and was 2 seat in the men's heavy 8+. He
also coxed when needed. In 1999 he became Head coach at UNL. In 2000 he was
recruited by Sagamore to build a High School Rowing Program. Around the same
time he picked up the art of sculling. Sculling allowed for his team to acquire
many medals with only a handful of people. By 2006 his scullers won every
sculling event for boys and girls at the Long Island Championships. Coach Smith
is also the chairperson for two regattas hosting over 700 athletes. In his
learn to row youth and adult programs and during private lessons Smith
has given literally hundreds of rowers a strong foundation in the sport of
rowing here on Long Island.
Hugo Guardado Henriquez:
(Camp
Director) Coach
Hugo is currently coaching at Manhasset High School and joined Manhasset's Crew
team as Head Coach in the spring of 2008. Coach Hugo was the former Head coach
at St. Anthony's crew team for the past seven years where he led the team to win
many races Including the Stotesbury Cup, and the Head of the Charles Regatta.
While coaching at Manhasset, coach Hugo has led the team to win several NY State
Championships, Stotesbury Cup, National Championship and Junior National medals, he also led the team to
medal several times at the Head of the Charles Regatta including this pass fall
of 2011. Hugo started his
rowing career at Dowling College in 1996. He remained on the team until 1998
when he started to attend the State University of New York. While on the
Dowling team, Hugo rowed Novice during the 1996-1997 year and was on the
lightweight squad.
Larry Muri:
(Varsity Men's Coach) Coach Larry is the new head coach for Fordham
Prep and he will be joining our coaching staff during the summer of 2012.
Prior to coaching for Fordham Prep, coach Larry spend many years coaching for Chaminade where he
led the team to win several NY State Championships, Stotesbury Cup, National
Championship and Junior National medals, he also led the team to medal several
times at the Head of the Charles Regatta. We are extremely excited
to have another amazing and dedicated coach
join our program for this
upcoming summer.
Tara Ann Marsigliano:
(Under 17th Women's Coach)
Coach Tara
Joined Manhasset Crew in the Fall of 2010. Coach Tara was a former rower from
Iona College as a walk on rower her freshman year being moved to Varsity her
second semester. She competed at the NYS State Championships in the Women's
Varsity Pair winning Gold in 2007 and also competed in the Dad Vail Regatta in
the spring of 07' as semi- finals in the Women's Varsity Pair. She received
the 2006-2007 Gold Oar Award for Outstanding Athletic Achievements as a Novice
Rower. Coach Tara also rowed twice at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston
in 2008 and 2009 in the Women's Varsity Four events. In her senior year at Iona
she received the title of Women's Varsity Captain for the 2009-2010 Athletic
Rowing Season. Coach Tara has a Bachelors of Arts degree in Mass Communications
specializing in Broadcast from Iona College and is currently attending Hofstra
University studying for her Masters in Physical Education with an expected
Graduation in the Spring of 2012. She is also training for her first Triathlon
in June 2011.
